Background image:

The background image is a close-up of a drawing by the 16th-17th century Andean historian Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala. In this image, a khipukamayuq, or khipu specialist, holds a khipu (quipu), a record-keeping and communication device made of knotted cotton or camelid fiber cords. Khipus were used by the Pre-Columbian Andean civilizations for architectural, astronomical, and census-keeping purposes.
